Tino 03:32
Tino said that he’s gonna get us all into the party (whoa-oh) And Tino said you should totally dye your hair Tino said that it’s gonna be a time and we can’t miss it But when we get to the party I bet Tino isn’t there Tino isn’t there Tino’s never there Tino said that we’re gonna start a band in his basement (whoa-oh) And Tino told me ‘bout this concert, said we’ve really gotta go Tino said he’s got tickets to give me on Wednesday But when Wednesday comes I bet Tino doesn’t show Tino doesn’t show Tino never shows He’s hypnotizing And mesmerizing But Tino answers No one’s call Tino called, said he’s picking up and moving out to Philly (whoa-oh) Said that anyone who’s anyone is headed out there He’s gonna leave us high and dry But Tino doesn’t care Tino doesn’t care And Tino’s never there Tino isn’t there (He’s hypnotizing) Tino isn’t there (And mesmerizing) Tino’s never there (But Tino answers no one’s call)

You still have to get out of bed Brush your teeth Walk the dog Don’t forget you need to take your meds And you still have to do your job Send emails Make those calls Even as you’re holding back the sobs 'Cause on the inside we’re crying, we’re dying And this is just the start On the inside we’re fighting, igniting And it’s tearing us apart You still have to go to the store Buy some food Cook that food You still need to eat though it’s a chore You still need to go fetch the mail Wash your clothes Clean up the house Then get to bed so you can do it all again But on the inside we’re bleeding and we’re needing To know there’s something more (But is there something more?) On the inside we’re desperate, no one gets it And it just goes on and on On the inside it’s dark here, no spark here And we’re out here on our own (Always all alone) On the inside we’re dejected, we’ve rejected Everything we’ve always known (Everything we’ve known) On the inside hearts are breaking, souls are aching And none of it makes sense (I just wish that it made sense) So we keep going never really knowing If this ennui will ever end

Empire 03:30
What’s with you today? What’s with today today? I’ve got to tell her I love her by 1:37 We mustn't dwell, no not today I don’t regret the things I’ve done But those I did not do Damn the man, save the empire Damn the man, save the empire Why don’t you all just fade away I guess nobody really has it all together Do you think this story is already written Or could a courageous act change the course of history Damn the man, save the empire Damn the man, save the empire Damn the man, save the empire Damn the man, save the empire Midnight… Midnight… Damn the man, save the empire (Damn the man, save the empire) Damn the man, save the empire (Damn the man, save the empire) Damn the man, save the empire (Damn the man, save the empire) Damn the man, save the empire (Damn the man, save the empire) Damn the man, save the empire (Damn the man, save the empire) Damn the man, save the empire (Damn the man, save the empire) Damn the man, save the empire (Damn the man, save the empire) Damn the man, damn the man

Avalanche 02:52
Just because it’s inconvenient doesn’t make it untrue Just because you disagree it doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want to There is such a thing as truth and it cannot be debated Swapping out reality for the narrative they created Throwing ‘round these words and phrases like you know what they mean They keep calling out for freedom while being slaves to ideology The emperor is naked and the city is on fire Denial is what stokes the flames of what’s become a funeral pyre When it all comes tumbling down The sound is deafening You can hear it all around The inane, the insane The avalanche of apathy and disdain Grant me the strength to survive today
5.
Cabin Fever 04:40
Sitting alone Nobody’s home With a mind that’s in overdrive right now What is that sound Spinning around A time bomb that’s about to explode And it feels like sinking When you can’t stop the thinking Clear out the clutter and let’s get this sorted out Every night Try as I might I can’t seem to get out of the gate Nothing in here Is at all clear It’s hard to know what to do anymore It’s so hard the not knowing Where anything’s going Wake me up later after all of this has passed [MONLOGUE] I’m starting to wonder why I’m still here–In this house, in this city, in this country… The whole thing just makes you start to question everything to the point that I’m starting to wonder if I even know who I am anymore. Every cell in my body is screaming out for change–change in every arena of my life: my job, my home, my goals–all the things I used to take for granted, all the things I never questioned before. And it’s like my brain is racing a million miles a minute and I can’t keep up. I’ve got all these things I want to do and somehow I feel paralyzed and stuck. I can’t move. My mind won’t stop, but my body won’t start, won’t act, won’t just do something–anything… I mean, obviously the world has forever been changed and by extension our individual lives will change as well. I just wish I could go somewhere. I wish I could do something. I wish I could see someone. I need to get out of this place before these four walls consume me whole. Before I really lose my mind, whatever is left of it to lose.
6.
Every morning Day after day It’s always the same Never any change So I am proposing That we pack up and go Challenge the status quo And everything we know You’re not making a living if you just work until you die This can’t be how we were meant to spend our lives Always searching but we never seem to find That peace of mind Numbers on pages Struggling to define Where to draw the line How to spend the time Consume all the knowledge Of those who went before Who opened up the door The ones you can’t ignore Step outside your comfort zone and you may see That there is more than just one way to be A human being on this big chaotic sphere The answer’s here So hold on…

about

DC rock ensemble, Dear Daria, channels our collective pandemic-induced existential dread and musings on new EP, Solastalgia

Solastalgia is the six song follow-up to Dear Daria’s debut album, Can I Be Frank? Engineered and mixed by Mark Reiter at BIAS Studios in Northern Virginia, Solastalgia, will undoubtedly warrant repeat listens.

“Tino” and “Empire” are bonafide pop anthems that have been big crowd pleasers at the band’s live shows. The former describes the archetypal flakey friend who makes a lot of promises but rarely follows through, while the latter is an homage to the mid-90s cult classic, Empire Records. The EP’s other four tracks are more cerebral post-pandemic reflections. “On the Inside” explores how lockdown-induced depression made even the most simple and mundane of tasks feel daunting and impossible. “Avalanche” is a reaction to the skepticism of science and rejection of truth and fact that proliferated throughout the pandemic. “Cabin Fever” is a manic, frenzied study of what can happen to people when you keep them cooped up inside by themselves for too long, and “Making a Dying” is a somber, but hopeful closer that asks the listener a simple, but profound question: can we really call it “making a living” if we have to work until we die? And could there perhaps be a different path we could take?

Dear Daria is composed of DC music veterans Maryjo Mattea, Joshua Hunter, Eamonn Donnelly, and Dan ABH. The band writes storyteller songs about angst, love, mental health and depression, and a longing for the world to be the kind of safe and accepting place we all wished we lived in. The band’s spirit is informed by a post-modern mosaic of pop-culture references. Musically, Dear Daria is a brightly-colored swirl of power pop, indie rock, alt-rock, and pop punk.

Modern Mystery Blog called the band “the perfect purveyors of tuneful heart-on-sleeve alt-rock”, and KMS Reviews said, “You gotta love this retro-soaked handmade honesty…it’s a sound that you can dance, sing along, and get addicted to while learning a life lesson.” Guitarist Joshua Hunter discovered the term “solastalgia”, which combines the Latin words for “home” and “pain/suffering”. Philosopher Glenn Albrecht coined the term and defines it as "the homesickness you have when you are still at home" when your home environment is changing in ways you find distressing. “It feels like we accidentally made a concept album,” says Hunter, and “solastalgia” summed up its ethos perfectly.
