about

Be transported back to Samantha’s bedroom in "Sixteen Candles" circa 1984 as DC indie pop rock quartet Dear Daria serves up some 80s nostalgia realness with their second single, ‘John Hughes’. The song begins with Eamonn Donnelly’s chorus-kissed ass, which opens up thanks to Joshua Hunter’s ethereal guitar tones that create a beautifully lush, hazy landscape. Scott MAnley’s technical, tasteful, and refined cymbal work is not to be overlooked as his kick pedal and Donnelly’s bass drive the heartbeat rhythm in lockstep. Maryjo Mattea’s vocal delivery is one of her most sensuous to date. (The fragile delicate performance at 2:50 is perfection.) Hunter’s swirling guitars draw direct comparisons to The Cure and Tears for Fears, while Donnelly’s New Order style bass lines and Manley’s Police-inspired drumming give you new wave vibes for days. The tapestry woven by Mattea’s voice and lyrics will send you to the prom dance floor, swaying in your crush’s arms. If you’re looking for a 4+ minute escape into a different age, this song will definitely fit the bill.

lyrics

Close your eyes
Imagine that we're both standing
In the rain
On a summer afternoon

Somebody said
This all feels so familiar
But nobody could say why

Now here we are
It's just like a John Hughes movie
You feel it too
There's something in the air

You'll be the boy
The one with the reputation
I'll be the girl
From the wrong side of the tracks
Eccentric and vain
Anything but ordinary
Their stories go on and on and on and on and on

Now here we are
It's just like a John Hughes movie
You feel it too
There's something in the air
Clever and cruel
Each moment never-ending
Take us back to relive it again and again and again

Take my hand
Rewind the video cassette
Bring me back there
And never let me go

Now here we are
It's just like a John Hughes movie
You feel it too
There's something in the air
Clever and cruel
Each moment never-ending
Take us back to relive it again and again and again
